Privacy policy
How WordWiz handles your information. Last updated 24 October 2026.
The short version
- You don’t need an account to use WordWiz, and we never ask for your name, email address or any other personal details.
- The letters and words you type are processed in your own browser and are not sent to us.
- WordWiz itself doesn’t set any cookies.
- We show adverts from Google AdSense. Google and its advertising partners may use cookies to show and measure ads. If you’re in the UK or EU, we ask for your consent before this happens.
Who we are
This policy covers the website at wordwiz.co.uk (“WordWiz”, “we”, “us”). If you have any questions about this policy or your information, contact us at chrisrcarter@gmail.com.
Information we collect
Things you type
The word tools (unscrambler, anagram solver, Wordle helper and so on) run entirely in your web browser. The letters and words you enter are not sent to or stored by WordWiz.
Dictionary and thesaurus look-ups
Definitions and synonyms come mainly from a word database stored on our own site. If a word isn’t in it, your browser asks one of these free services instead, sending them the word you searched for:
- Free Dictionary API (dictionaryapi.dev) – for definitions
- Wiktionary, run by the Wikimedia Foundation – for definitions
- Datamuse – for synonyms and related words
As with any website, these services will also receive your IP address and basic browser information when your browser contacts them. Their own privacy policies apply.
Website hosting
WordWiz is hosted by Netlify. Like most hosting providers, Netlify automatically records basic technical information when pages are requested – such as IP address, browser type and the page visited – to deliver the site, keep it secure and fix problems.
Fonts
Our text font is loaded from Google Fonts. To deliver it, Google receives your IP address and browser information. Google Fonts does not set cookies.
Advertising and cookies
WordWiz is free because it shows adverts provided by Google AdSense. Google and its partners may use cookies, web beacons and similar technologies to:
- show adverts on WordWiz and other websites;
- show adverts based on your previous visits to this and other websites (personalised advertising), if you allow it;
- measure how adverts perform and prevent fraud.
Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on a user’s prior visits to this website or other websites. Google’s use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to you based on your visit to this site and/or other sites on the internet.
You can find out more in How Google uses information from sites that use its services and how Google uses cookies in advertising.
Your choices
- UK and EU visitors are shown a consent message the first time they visit. Advertising cookies are only used for personalised ads if you agree. You can change your choice at any time using the Privacy and cookie settings link at the bottom of every page.
- You can turn off personalised ads from Google at any time in Google’s Ad Settings.
- You can opt out of personalised advertising from many other companies at Your Online Choices.
- You can also block or delete cookies in your browser settings. You’ll still see adverts, but they will be less relevant to you.
Legal basis (UK GDPR)
We rely on your consent for advertising cookies and personalised ads. Technical information handled by our hosting provider is processed on the basis of our legitimate interests in running a secure, working website.
Your rights
Under UK data protection law you have the right to ask for access to, correction of or deletion of personal information about you, to object to or restrict its use, and to withdraw consent at any time. Because WordWiz doesn’t collect personal details directly, most requests will relate to the third parties above – but we’re happy to help. Contact us at chrisrcarter@gmail.com.
If you’re unhappy with how your information has been handled, you can complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office at ico.org.uk.
Children
WordWiz is a general-audience site. We don’t knowingly collect personal information from children.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time, for example if we add new features or services. The date at the top shows when it was last changed.
